Cotswolds, ARC Painswick

Our Cotswold property sits in the centre of Painswick, a historic wool town known as the ‘Queen of the Cotswolds’. The Cotswold village is famous for St Mary’s churchyard which hosts 99 identical yew trees, the last Rococo Garden in England, and its beautiful limestone architecture set atop a hillside. 

The honey-coloured stone buildings that reside in Painswick catch the autumnal light perfectly as the rural village transforms into a cosy, charming space. ARC Painswick is no different. The property is a Grade II listed 15th-century merchant’s manor, surrounded by fields, woodland, and rivers.

An autumn break in the Cotswolds, the largest designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the UK, is a must. The property, sleeping 26 guests, is perfect for both long- and short-stay getaways with family and friends, or for corporate workaways, and retreats. ARC Painswick is only 2 hours and 30 minutes from London and is surrounded by various autumnal activities. 

A visit to the Painswick Rococo Garden, a restored 16th-century landscape with ornate features, will allow for viewings of the autumnal foliage as maple and cyclamen trees transform throughout the six-acre garden into gold and red. There are also various ancient woodlands to explore to view the changing of the seasons before entering a fire-lit pub and sitting down for a traditional British dinner.

Cornwall, ARC Padstow

ARC Padstow in the rural hamlet of St Issey, Cornwall, resides on the Camel Estuary. The property is an 18th-century listed manor, which is both a former mill and courthouse. The property benefits from being a short walk from the coast allowing for picturesque autumnal strolls with a hot drink in hand. Visiting the area in autumn allows for crowd-free explorations of this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. 

ARC Padstow sleeps up to 26 guests so is perfect for large group getaways over the autumn half term.

Peak District, ARC Peaks

ARC Peaks benefits from its rural location, offering a complete escape from modern life as guests hike, wild swim, and simply relax at a property that feels good in the rain, away from all that is overwhelming.

The ARC Peaks building is a former printworks, given a new lease of life by architect firm Parti, with its striking modern extension. With both an indoor pool and outdoor wood fired hot tub, ARC Peaks offers a relaxing opportunity over the autumn period to switch off, be present, and connect with those around you. The ARC Peaks property is our largest ARC to date and is just 3 hours and 10 minutes from London or just over one hour from Manchester. 

Hikes such as the Shutlingsloe hill, known as the ‘Matterhorn of Cheshire’, allow for autumnal views over Macclesfield forest giving hikers a chance to embrace the autumnal foliage of the UK from a height. Hilly hikes and autumn woodland walks can be finished with cosy pub lunches where the fires are lit and pints are in hand.

Norfolk, ARC Next-the-Sea

In the centre of Wells-next-the-Sea is our North Norfolk property: ARC Next-the-Sea, a bright, modern conversion of the 1914 church rooms opposite St Nicholas Church. Wells-next-the-Sea offers visitors the most beautiful beach in all of Norfolk with its seemingly never-ending sandy beach backed by colourful huts and evergreen pine trees. 

As autumn appears, the surrounding fields become alive with hares and deer, and the birds begin their migrations, allowing for seasonal sights that are easily missed during city life. The ARC is under 3 hours from London and offers a perfect autumn escape.

Head to the Norfolk Broads for both boating and birdwatching, or to the RSPB and/or National Trust reserves to witness the bird migrations en masse. Or for a more historical trip, head to Holkham Hall to explore the Neo-Palladian architecture, ornate interiors, museum, and, if the weather permits, the walled garden and woodland play area. This getaway is perfect for a short weekend break, or something longer, with many woodlands to walk, historical places to visit, and both a heated outdoor pool and hot tub back at the ARC.

Suffolk, ARC Thorpeness

In Suffolk you’ll find ARC Thorpeness, a Grade II listed water tower spanning over five floors. The property was transformed over two years into a memorable group holiday house by architect firm Parti, owned by husband-and-wife architect duo Eleanor and Tom Leahy. The tower was close to being condemned with its failing steel frame and crumbling bricks, but Eleanor and Tom  embarked on their restoration of ARC Thorpeness with the knowledge that they were there to rescue the space. As they boldly reimagined one of Suffolk’s most distinctive coastal buildings, Eleanor and Tom kept alive a part of Thorpeness’ history. The property sleeps 20 guests and is just over two hours from London. 

ARC Thorpeness provides a special autumnal staycation in the purpose-built holiday resort. Every element of Thorpeness carries the same dreamy, almost fictional quality of the village: the mock Tudor architecture and the childhood magic (such as the Meare's tiny islands being named for a place or character from J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan). In autumn, the dreaminess only heightens as the foliage turns auburn and surrounds the Thorpeness ‘House in the Clouds’.

Embark on pumpkin picking in the surrounding countryside, with various farms opening their doors for pick-your-own activities such as Akenham Hall Farm or Woodbridge Pumpkin Patch, all under an hour away. 

Just a 35-minute drive away from the ARC property is Southwold Maize Maze, with 2 maize mazes and various other activities such as pedal go-karts, jumping pillows, zip-lines, and climbing towers, keeping the entire family occupied.
