Every ARC property lives in a different county of the United Kingdom. From Cornwall to Cheshire, or Gloucestershire to Suffolk and Norfolk, a stay at one of ARC’s properties has the potential to bring you closer to what Britain’s heritage is all about. The properties may be distinct in their own way but a few things remain consistent, and one of them is the close proximity of each property to great, traditional pubs. Find below the team at ARC’s favourite local pubs near each of the five properties.
ARC Painswick
In the quintessential countryside of the Cotswolds sits ARC’s Painswick property. The property is a Grade II listed 15th-century wool merchants manor called Cardynham House which was restored to its original beauty under the architect firm Parti. It is one of ARC’s larger properties, sleeping 26 guests.
The Oak pub is just a one-minute walk from our ARC Painswick property—it is quite literally just around the corner. Serving real ale, cider, and locally sourced food, the Oak is a classic Cotswoldian pub, with traditional interior and a courtyard garden.
The Wallpack Inn is slightly further away with a drive of under 10 minutes or a 45 minute walk, but is worth the extra travel. The pub is nestled in the Slad Valley and affords hill views. The kitchen garden, a space of two acres, provides much of the salad, herbs, and specialty vegetables to the chefs at The Wallpack Inn. The pub is open 12pm-12am all week so is perfect for a lunchtime or dinner visit, or even for a later evening drink.
ARC Padstow
ARC’s North Cornwall property is in the rural hamlet of St Issey near Padstow, on the Camel Estuary. The building is an 18th century listed manor, which is both former mill and courthouse, with a Georgian facade.
Our ARC pub pick for those visiting Padstow is The Pickwick Inn. The pub is just a 15 minute walk into Burgois and provides guests with beautiful views of the Camel Estuary and St Issey’s farmland with roaming cows.
ARC Peaks
ARC Peaks is ARC’s largest property to date, sleeping up to 30 guests. Surrounded by fields and rivers, the ARC is located in Wildboarclough, in the Peak District National Park. The building is a former printworks with an incredible contemporary extension. Despite its rural location, there are various pubs within an hour walk away, or less than 10 minutes by car.
The Wincle Brewery is a local brewery located in Dane Valley and serves beer brewed on-site. The Brewery’s taproom is open 7 days a week between 10:30 and 16:00, and the brewery has a beer garden to enjoy them in too. The brewery is just a 10 minute drive away or a 1 hour 20 minute walk from the ARC’s Peaks property, and is a favourite of ARC’s.
For a slightly closer pub, The Rose and Crown Inn is only a 5 minute drive from ARC Peaks and a 45 minute walk. The stroll to the pub will take you through tree lined country roads, surrounded by fields and sheep. The view from the 17th century pub looks out onto the path just walked and the surrounding charm of the Peak District—green hills, sheep, and stone lined roads.
ARC Thorpeness
ARC Thorpeness is ARC’s newest property, having opened its doors in the winter of 2025. The five storey house is a grade II listed converted water tower that sleeps twenty guests. Being in the heart of Thorpeness village, the property is blessed with remarkably close access to various amenities.
Our pub pick for Thorpeness is The Dolphin, just a 3 minute walk from the ARC Thorpeness. The Dolphin serves food with ingredients that are either grown in their kitchen garden or sourced locally. They offer a catch of the day alongside their seasonal menu, and on Sundays they offer a traditional roast and fruit crumble option. Drinks wise, The Dolphin favours local ales.
ARC Next-the-Sea
ARC’s North Norfolk property in Wells-next-the-Sea is a bright modern conversion of the 1914 church rooms, residing opposite St Nicholas Church. The property sleeps 20 guests and sits a short walk away from sandy beaches backed by pinewoods, and the town centre.
The Globe Inn is just a five minute walk from ARC Next-the-Sea and is open from 8am-12am, making the Globe Inn perfect for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The Globe Inn serves traditional British pub food such as fish and chips and a catch of the day.
